The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas.

-Linus Pauling

How do creative ideas – or any ideas – originate? How do you capture a stirring of an emotion or a flash of a perception barely inside your awareness and seemingly, almost within your grasp? How do you bring what might be a fleeting concept to completion?

A concept is not enough: “An inability to go beyond the hunch is a creativity cruncher. Remaining forever in a conceptual stage is also unproductive. There is no substitute for the perseverance involved in taking ideas and turning them into realities. Hard work therefore, must accompany ideas. It is a prerequisite…Creative people do not only have inspirations; they also transform them into something communicable. They make something of their inspirations.” (HAVE YOU EVER HAD A HUNCH? The Importance of Creative Thinking)

Sometimes, you can be stuck on and idea, quite unable to move forward by developing it further. Yet you feel reluctant to give up on it. You know that it has potential but you have little clarity as to its route. At times, it helps to simply to put the idea away…

I have an idea;

I’ll put it to bed.

Wake up in the morning

With a story in my head.

On A Velocipede (I TOUCHED A STAR IN MY DREAM LAST NIGHT)

Your intuitions about the creative potential of your idea, are often right. To discover what it might become, you need to first enter its mystery, knowing that there are so many possibilities.
